Green chemistry, also referred to as environmentally benign chemistry, aims to optimize the efficiency of chemical processes and develop products that minimize or eliminate the production and use of harmful substances. Green chemistry goes beyond addressing unintended byproducts and includes all substances involved in the process and is used in various fields of chemical science and industry. The wide-ranging applications of green chemistry include its use in the pharmaceutical industry, where it promotes the development of approaches that reduce or eliminate the use of solvents or makes said approaches safer and more efficient. It has also led to innovative methods of synthesizing traditional petroleum-based chemicals using biological materials, such as plant matter or waste. Heterocyclic compounds, which are cyclic molecules with one or more heteroatoms replacing carbon atoms, are of great interest in various aspects of daily life.
