Abstract

The soilmassbehindaretainingwallgraduallyyieldsandseparatesfromthestationarysoilmasswiththecomplexshapeoftheslipsurface depending onthemodeofwallmovementandroughnessofthewallsurface.Inthisstudy,theproblemofarigidretainingwallwithauniform surcharge actingalongthehorizontalbackfill underactivetranslationmodeisinvestigatedinatwo-dimensionalsystemofequilibrium.Exact stress solutionsbasedonJanssen'sapproacharegeneralizedinrectangularcoordinatesandarevalidatedwithboundaryconditionsonthe retaining wallandattheCoulombsliplinebehindthewall.BecausetheyieldconditionisnotusedinJanssen'sapproach,theproposedsolutionis a merelystaticstresssolution,notstaticallyadmissiblesolution.Newequationsaredevelopedtoestimatethemagnitudeanddistributionof vertical, horizontalandshearstressesinthefailurezonebehindaretainingwall.Theproposedanalysisindicatesthearchingeffectbehindthe retaining wallbecausethemaximumstressesdonotappearedatthetoe;butatsomedistanceawayfromthetoeoftheretainingwall.Theresults of theproposedformulationsarecomparedwithbothfull-scaleandlaboratory-scaleexperimentaldataaswellastheexistingformulations.The proposed analysisprovidescomparableapproximationsforhorizontalactivestressdistribution,themagnitudeandtheapplicationheightofthe horizontal activeforceatthewall.
