Pharmacological aspects of Zizyphus jujuba Mill., emphasize on human brain and nervous system

Abstract

Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) is one of the important medicinal plants belong to Rhamnaceae family, which is applied in the pharmaceutical industries. This plant is native to the Southeast and Central Asia and the Caucasus. It was cultivated in some countries such as China, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran, and then moved to the countries surrounding Mediterranean Sea, including Syria, Italy, France, Spain and North Africa. ). Jujube is the indigenous plants in Iran and mainly cultivated in Provinces of Khorasan, Golestan, Mazandaran, Gilan, Fars, Esfahan, Yazd, Kerman, Lorestan, Hamedan, Tehran, Qazvin and Qom. Jujube fruits are highly nutritious with medicinal properties. They are an excellent source of vitamin C, phenolic compounds, carbohydrates and minerals (particularly potassium and iron). jujube has a great potential in developing further as food and medicinal supplements for brain health and clinical studies indicated that no adverse and drug interactions have been noted for the consumption of jujube. This study show that , jujube in form of extract, herbal tea and decoction, fruit have capability to reduce anxiety, insomnia, neurodegeneration effects and improve calming down, sleeping, learning. Besides, many studies suggested that other effects of jujube to treatment of a lot of diseases like cancer, diabetes, hypertension, cardiac, immune and digestive problems. Hence, it is a new way for human being to use generous nature sources to cure human diseases by separating bioactive compound from organic materials like zizyphusjujuba.
