Abstract
Introduction: Lumbar disc herniation, a condition causing pain and functional limitations, may be influenced by hamstring tightness, which can exacerbate symptoms or recovery. This study investigates the relationship between hamstring ROM and unilateral lumbar disc herniation, aiming to inform rehabilitation strategies and neuromuscular adaptations.
Method: This study involved 30 patients with lumbar disc herniation, divided into groups based on the side of radiating pain (14 right-sided and 16 left-sided). MRI was used to evaluate the disc condition, while hamstring ROM was measured using the passive straight leg raise test and a goniometer. The ROM data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA to explore differences between the groups.
Results: The analysis revealed asymmetry in hamstring ROM between groups with left- and right-sided radiating symptoms. Although the overall effect of symptom side on hamstring ROM was not significant, a notable difference was observed in left hamstring ROM (F= 28.2,p= 0.00). These results suggest that hamstring flexibility may vary depending on the side of lumbar disc herniation symptoms.
Conclusion: This study examines the impact of hamstring range of motion (ROM) on lumbar disc herniation symptoms, highlighting the role of hamstring flexibility in spinal biomechanics. Findings reveal asymmetry in hamstring ROM, with significant differences observed in left hamstring ROM linked to localized muscular changes. Addressing hamstring tightness, particularly in unilateral symptoms, is suggested as a crucial element in rehabilitation strategies for lumbar disc herniation.
