The Job Status of Graduates of BA Translator Training Program at the University of Birjand

Abstract

The sociological turn is a recent paradigm shift in Translation Studies. The need for translation services has experienced considerable growth in the global market, hence the need to explore the translation job market through the lens of sociology. This research aimed to explore the current job status of graduates of the undergraduate Translator Training Program at the University of Birjand and the usefulness of university courses in this regard. A questionnaire was given to 90 graduates to inquire about their current job status and the challenges they have faced. The participants were individuals who graduated from the University of Birjand between 2016 and 2021. The analysis showed that more than 75% of respondents are currently employed. Among the unemployed ones, nearly half stated that they were not able to find a job in spite of investing considerable effort. Limited job opportunities (especially in small cities), inadequate salary, and insufficient preparation in university courses were among the most important challenges the participants mentioned. A majority of the participants believed that a bachelor’s degree in Translation might be beneficial, but not sufficient for entering the job market. Less than half found undergraduate courses effective in preparing them for employment. The research also highlighted the discrepancies between graduates’ expectations and the reality of the market. The study emphasizes the importance of curriculum reform, greater incorporation of practical courses, and stronger connection between universities and the translation job market to better prepare graduates for a successful career.
