Abstract

Abstract Introduction: Public libraries are increasingly recognized as active catalysts for sustainable tourism and climate resilience. Once perceived merely as repositories of books, libraries have evolved into resilience hubs, climate action agents, cultural heritage stewards, technology enablers, and community educators. Their expanding roles align with the global shift toward integrating culture, environment, and education in sustainability agendas. Objectives: This study aims to explore how libraries worldwide contribute to sustainable development, particularly in promoting climate resilience and sustainable tourism. It also seeks to identify the opportunities and challenges for leveraging public libraries in Iran as strategic actors in national sustainability and tourism frameworks. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted, synthesizing international research on libraries’ roles in sustainability and climate action. Studies from various regions—including Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas—were analyzed to identify common themes, innovative practices, and contextual differences relevant to Iran’s socio-cultural landscape. Results: Findings reveal that libraries enhance community resilience by offering safe spaces, reliable information, and digital access during crises. They promote climate literacy and environmental awareness through sustainable collections, educational workshops, and eco-friendly operations. Furthermore, libraries contribute to cultural and heritage-based tourism by preserving local traditions, indigenous knowledge, and intangible cultural assets. Across regions, emerging practices demonstrate libraries’ adaptability as green, smart, and community-centered infrastructures, capable of integrating technology with environmental and cultural goals. Conclusions: In Iran—home to UNESCO-recognized heritage sites such as the Lut Desert and Persepolis—public libraries have the potential to bridge cultural preservation and sustainable tourism. However, their impact remains constrained by limited funding, low ICT adoption, and weak policy integration. Strengthening libraries’ institutional and technological capacities can unlock their untapped potential as partners in national climate adaptation and tourism strategies. Investing in libraries ultimately advances both cultural sustainability and resilient tourism futures, positioning them as key community actors in the era of global environmental change Keywords: Public Libraries, Sustainable Tourism, Climate Change Resilience, Cultural Heritage Preservation, Green Libraries
