Abstract

Thispaperrepresentsadevelopedprocedurefortheevaluationofflashoverratescausedby bothlightningverticalandnon-verticalstrokesontransmissionlines,usingaMonteCarlomethod.The maingoalofthispaperistoincreasetheaccuracyflashoverratesthroughtheaccuratemodellingof networkcomponents,suchasfootingimpedance,thetransmissiontowerandchainofinsulators,and alsosimulationoflightningnon-verticalstrokes.Modellingnetworkcomponents,statisticalparameters relatedtolightningandaproblem-solvingalgorithmaredescribed.Parametricstudiesusingthis procedurecanalsobeperformedtodeterminethesensitivityoftheflashoverratewithrespecttosome parametersofthereturnstrokeandthetransmissionline.SimulationresultsobtainedusingMATLABand theATP/EMTPshowthatconsideringthelightningnon-verticalinsteadofverticalstrokesleadstoabetter evaluationofthelightningperformanceoftransmissionlines
