Abstract

Introduction

Customer equity, defined as the total combined value of a company's current and future customers, is critical for the sustainability of online businesses. In the competitive landscape of digital commerce, platforms like Instagram serve as powerful tools for customer engagement. This study explores how customer participation motivations spanning entertainment, social connection, and brand affinity enhance customer equity. The mediating roles of brand trust and social media marketing activities are central to this investigation, using Digikala, Iran's largest online retailer, as the focal point. The study emphasizes the significance of customer trust, particularly in an era where digital transactions lack face-to-face interactions, necessitating robust brand communication strategies.

Materials & Methods

A descriptive-survey approach was adopted for this applied research. Participants comprised 384 Instagram users of Digikala, selected using Cochran's formula. The study employed a convenience sampling method and collected data via a 33-item online questionnaire validated for reliability using Cronbach’s alpha (above 0.7). Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS and SmartPLS software, employing structural equation modeling to test hypotheses. The methodology also included demographic profiling of respondents, focusing on variables such as age, gender, and shopping behaviors.

Research Findings

Findings reveal that social media marketing activities play a crucial role in fostering brand trust and customer equity. Motivations such as the desire for entertainment, social interaction, and information significantly influence participation in social media marketing. This participation enhances customer engagement, strengthens brand trust, and promotes positive word-of-mouth advertising. The study also highlights the interplay between brand trust and customer equity, emphasizing that transparent communication strategies are instrumental in sustaining customer loyalty and enhancing equity.

Discussion of Results & Conclusions

The research highlights the critical role of social media marketing activities in influencing customer equity through enhanced brand trust. Transparency and openness in online brand communities, such as those facilitated by Digikala on Instagram, emerge as essential factors in building customer trust. Motivating customer participation via activities like gamification, interactive campaigns, and personalized updates strengthens engagement and fosters mutual trust.

The study reveals that customer participation motivations, such as entertainment, interpersonal communication, and the desire for reliable information, significantly enhance their engagement in social media marketing. This engagement, in turn, drives positive outcomes like word-of-mouth advertising and improved brand perception. The role of brand trust is particularly emphasized, acting as a mediator between marketing activities and customer equity. Trust reinforces customer loyalty, contributing to long-term relationships and higher customer lifetime value.

Practical implications suggest that companies should focus on creating customer-centric strategies that integrate transparency and interactivity. These efforts not only improve the effectiveness of marketing campaigns but also ensure sustainable growth in customer equity. For online retailers like Digikala, adopting such strategies aligns with their operational model, where fostering trust in a digital-only transaction environment is pivotal. The findings further stress that aligning marketing initiatives with customer motivations leads to a stronger customer-brand relationship and, consequently, greater financial and reputational gains.
