چکیده مقاله
Slaughterhouse waste, particularly ruminant rumen contents, has the potential to serve as an alternative feed
source; however, challenges such as unpleasant odors and suboptimal quality must be addressed. This study aimed
to evaluate the palatability of rumen content silage enriched with pomegranate peel and processed poultry litter
compared to traditional corn silage in the diets of fattening lambs. Rumen contents from cattle, sheep, and goats
were collected, filtered, mixed with 20% dried pomegranate peel and 10% processed poultry litter, and ensiled for
45 days. Palatability was assessed using the short-term intake rate (STIR) methodology. The findings indicated
that corn silage demonstrated significantly greater palatability than rumen content silages (P < 0.05). Although no
statistically significant differences were observed among the various rumen content silages, sheep rumen silage
showed a numerically higher intake. The undesirable odor and suboptimal composition of rumen silages were
identified as critical factors contributing to reduced animal preference. This study highlights that while rumen
contents can be utilized as an alternative feed source, improving their quality and palatability requires enhanced
processing techniques and the incorporation of potential flavor additives.
