Abstract

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is designing a simplified brain emotional learning controller for DC–DC boost converter and studying its performance in practical implementations. Design/methodology/approach – The designed controller is a model-free controller with a fast response. The controller uses only the output voltage as the feedback signal. In conventional versions of Brain Emotional Learning Based Intelligent Controller (BELBIC), a PID block is used to construct the sensory input signal that its coefficients are set by the trial and error procedure. To make the controller design more convenient, this PID block is eliminated in the proposed method. This controller operates without the need for any knowledge from the system parameters and dynamics. Findings – The proposed method is fast with ensured response. There are only two coefficients to be set. This makes the practical implementation easy and suitable for different industries in need of fast and stable responses. In comparison with proportional integrator controller, the settling time of the proposed controller is less. Originality/value – The controller is a simplified model of conventional brain emotional learning–based intelligent control; it uses only one state space variable in design. The PID block that constructs the sensory input signal in conventional BELBIC has been eliminated in the proposed method to reduce the tuning parameters and computational load of the controller.
